5 Things to do This Thanksgiving in San Antonio

Thanksgiving week is a great time to be in San Antonio. Our city is known for serving up delicious dishes and a whole lot of fun year-round. Add the November holidays that get everyone in high spirits and you’re sure to have a good time whether you’re a local, visiting family or on vacation.

Thursday is time for turkey, but what about the rest of the week? We’ve got you covered with what’s happening during the Thanksgiving holiday in San Antonio.

Pull Up a Seat for the River Parade

Forget about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. San Antonio has one of the most unique holiday parades in the country. Every year the Riverwalk turns into a nighttime parade route for the Ford Holiday River Parade.

Boats are transformed into brightly lit floats that cruise down the riverwalk for an hour. The event also includes the River Walk Lighting Ceremony and enough shopping to get something for everyone on your list.

This year the Ford Holiday River Parade is on Friday, November 29th from 6pm to 9pm. The theme is Texas Music Christmas, and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons will be the grand marshal. Twenty-six other Texas musicians will join Billy during the parade so it’s sure to be a festive event.

Gobble ‘Til You Wobble

Another San Antonio Riverwalk Thanksgiving event that you’ve got to try at least once is Gobble ‘Til You Wobble Thanksgiving Day Brunch at the Hilton Palacio del Rio. It’s the perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving in San Antonio if you’re not into cooking and cleaning on your day off. For five hours you can stuff yourself with turkey from the carving station, soups made from scratch, chef-curated entrees and a decadent selection of holiday desserts.

Experience Winter Wonderland at the Parks

The theme parks prove San Antonio holidays are the best! The San Antonio Zoo, SeaWorld and Six Flags go all out for the holidays with amazing light displays, special winter wonderland attractions, ice skating, train rides and Christmastime treats. It’s such a good time Santa Claus stops by daily to join the fun.

Take Part in the Turkey Trot

On Thanksgiving most of us are so stuffed it’s hard to imagine that thousands of people go hungry every day in San Antonio. That’s why the San Antonio Food Bank holds the annual Turkey Trot 5K. On Thanksgiving morning you can burn some extra calories before gorging and help others fill their bellies.

If you’re not an avid runner that’s okay. The SA Turkey Trot is a kid-friendly, pet-friendly walk/run 5K. The race starts at 8:30am so you’ll still have plenty of time for a family Thanksgiving dinner after going the extra 3.1 miles for people in need.
